New Committee members appointed to Ofqual

The new Ofqual committee is fully up and running following the appointment of six members.

The Committee, which is chaired by Kathleen Tattersall, will act as a shadow board until Ofqual becomes fully independent from QCA.

The new members bring a broad spectrum of expertise and knowledge to Ofqual, having a wide variety of experience. Their backgrounds range from the water and gas industries to charitable organisations. The Committee also includes a headteacher and a further education college principal, who will be able to provide a first-hand insight into issues facing centres of learning.

The Committee will hold meetings six times a year on average. It is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction of Ofqual.

The new members are:

  • Dame Alexandra Burslem, a Civil Service Commissioner who also chairs the Education Honours Committee and the British Council's Education-UK Partnership.
  • Philip Fletcher CBE, Chairman of the Water Services Regulation Authority (Ofwat).
  • Tim Balcon, Chief Executive of Energy and Utility Skills.
  • David Butler OBE, Chief Executive of the National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations and a member of the National Judging Panel for the Teaching Awards Trust.
  • Maggie Galliers, Principal of Leicester College.
  • John Townsley, Headteacher of Morley High School and Executive Headteacher of Rodillian School.
