GCSE English literature 2000-2007

Each year Ofqual carries out reviews of standards in a range of GCSE and GCE A level subjects. The overall aim of the programme is to investigate standards in A level and GCSE examinations in order to determine any action needed to safeguard standards and to inform future development in the examinations.

Ofqual's standards reviews consider two issues: the maintenance of examination standards over time; together with the consistency of standards across awarding bodies in the current year. Each review aims to investigate the demand of syllabuses and their assessment instruments (for example question papers, mark schemes) and the level of performance required of candidates at key grade boundaries.

This report on GCSE English literature (2000 – 2007) shows that reviewers concluded that over the period of the review the overall demand of syllabuses had remained broadly comparable. Reviewers also concluded that the standards of performance were broadly comparable across awarding bodies at all grade boundaries within 2007.
