Ofqual seeks new board members

26 October 2009

Ofqual is continuing its progress to being a fully independent regulator with the recruitment of members for a new Board.

The Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families is seeking to appoint Board members to provide leadership and direction for the organisation, the new regulator of exams, qualifications and tests in England and vocational qualifications in Northern Ireland.

It's work will ensure that qualifications meet the needs of pupils, young people and adult learners and that they get the results that their work deserves, that standards are maintained and that qualifications count now and in the future.

Kathleen Tattersall, Chair of Interim Ofqual, said: "Members of the Board will play a key role in providing leadership to Ofqual, helping to set the organisation's strategic aims, values and standards, steering it through a period of change as it establishes itself as the new independent regulator.

"This is a significant challenge, but a fascinating and rewarding one. Ofqual needs strong, independently-minded Board Members to help it achieve its aims."

Legislation is currently before Parliament to establish Ofqual as an independent Non Ministerial Government Department, accountable directly to Parliament and the Northern Ireland Assembly. It is due to be established as an independent statutory body from April 1, 2010, subject to the will of Parliament.

Candidates are being sought from a wide range of backgrounds for appointment to the Board. One member will be appointed to specifically represent the interests of Northern Ireland.

The closing date for applications has now passed and applications are being processed.
