The statutory regulation of external qualifications

Last updated on: 08/04/2008

The statutory regulation of external qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland 2004 sets out the arrangements for the statutory regulation of external qualifications in those countries. The document outlines the principles and approaches to statutory regulation, the criteria for awarding bodies' procedures and the common criteria for all qualifications in the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). It also outlines additional criteria for different types of qualification. There is a wealth of important information in the appendices, including a guide to the NQF levels, a list of codes of practice and a list of subject-specific criteria.

This document was published by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). The regulatory function of QCA is now the responsibility of the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual). Ofqual regulates qualifications and monitors national curriculum assessments in England.
