Monitoring

Last updated on: 11/03/2008

The programme of work for regulating national curriculum assessments incorporates a range of monitoring activities that are informed by the government's five principles of good regulation. We focus on where the standard is embedded in particular processes, which are test development, marker training and level setting. Ofqual continues to develop regulatory instruments to ensure transparency and consistency.

Regulatory instruments

We have recently revised the regulatory framework and code of practice for national curriculum assessments. The new code and framework replace the versions published early in 2006. Revisions to these publications have been informed by feedback from stakeholders and evidence from monitoring activities. The changes are intended to achieve a more strategic approach to regulation and a better understanding of the processes which generate high-quality national curriculum assessments, based on a system of continuous improvement. Both documents are available to download from this page.

Regulatory framework

The regulatory framework places the criteria for the development and delivery of national curriculum assessments in the public arena, and sets out:

  • Ofqual's role as regulator of national curriculum assessments
  • the criteria against which each national curriculum assessment must be judged
  • the regulatory requirements for National Assessment Agency procedures
  • the programme and procedures for monitoring national curriculum assessments.

Regulatory reports

We publish reports on the monitoring of national curriculum assessments. The reports are available to download via the National curriculum assessments reports link on the left-hand side of this page.

Code of practice

The code of practice specifies the procedures and processes needed to ensure high quality, consistency and rigorous standards and provides stakeholders with a clear description of Ofqual's regulation of national curriculum assessments.

Copies of the regulatory framework and code of practice have been sent to the local and national authorities and agencies responsible for developing, distributing and marking national curriculum assessments and reporting the results. In addition, copies have been sent to other individuals and groups with an interest in national curriculum assessments at key stages 1, 2 and 3.
