Ofqual publishes statistics on the 2009 examination series

Ofqual today publishes the Enquiries about Results and Appeals official statistics report on the June 2009 A level and GCSE examinations.

There were more than 6 million GCSEs and over 2 million A and AS level subject entries in summer 2009. The majority of enquiries about results are requests for a review of marking where schools or colleges queried around 1.5% of GCSE subject entries and 1% of A level unit entries. Today's report shows the overall number of grades changed following a request for a remark remains, as in 2008, consistently low at less than 0.3% of the total subject entries.

Kathleen Tattersall, Chair of Ofqual, comments: "These figures provide invaluable information regarding the examination season. As regulator it is our role to ensure that fair systems are in place and that these are followed correctly. We are continuing to regulate awarding organisations to check that they have good quality assurance systems in place to ensure that any incorrect marking is quickly identified."

Awarding organisations must have published arrangements for the submission of enquires about results and for appeals against the awarding organisation's decisions. Ofqual collects and reports information on enquiries about results and appeals to monitor the number of occurrences each year and any changes over time.

The Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act, which gained Royal Assent on Thursday, November 12, 2009, included the provision for Ofqual to be established as an independent statutory body, reporting directly to Parliament.
