AQA and OCR Biology Exams - update

Having thoroughly investigated the matter, Ofqual is confident that the AQA and OCR A2 Biology papers sat in January were suitable and that the grades awarded are a fair and accurate measure of candidates' performance.

Following concerns raised by candidates and centres both awarding bodies were asked for reports on how their question papers compared to sample papers available to centres and to the qualification requirements. We are satisfied that the papers were appropriate in both areas.

Ofqual also observed the grade boundary awarding meetings for these units and found that the awarding committees took the concerns raised into consideration, along with the usual statistical and qualitative evidence used during the awarding process, when setting the grade boundaries. The awarding process adhered to the requirements of the Code of Practice.

If candidates are disappointed with their results, they should talk to their centres about the options open to them, which include accessing their marked script, having the marking of their paper reviewed or re-taking the assessment.

AQA and OCR Biology Exams

28 January 2010

Concerns have been raised by some students who sat AQA and OCR Biology A Level examinations in January 2010.

We have asked both AQA and OCR for reports on the papers students are complaining about and the measures they will be taking in response to these complaints.  It is too early for us to make any detailed comments on those papers.

We are not aware of any similar issues being raised with other papers sat so far during the January exam series.
