Ofqual statement on the White Paper - 'The Importance of Teaching'

Statement by Isabel Nisbet, Chief Executive of Ofqual:

"Ofqual regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments independently within the policy frameworks of successive governments. Today's White Paper, together with "Skills for Sustainable Growth" published last week, sets a policy direction for the future, and we will take both papers fully into account in our regulatory work.

"In particular, we shall now consider, with the awarding organisations concerned, the implications of the Government's statement for GCSEs which are currently being changed and have been submitted for approval by the regulators, including GCSE science.

"We will publish later today an exchange of letters with the Government in which we accept their request for evaluative work and regulatory advice on a range of issues raised in today's White Paper.

"At a time of change in education, Ofqual will make sure that the qualifications and assessments that we regulate continue to command confidence before, during and after the changes. Young people working for GCSEs and A levels now can be assured that their hard work will be rigorously and fairly assessed and their achievement will be recognised."
