Responses to newspapers

On February 28, the Sunday Times carried a story about the awarding of grades for GCSE science in 2009, claiming that Ofqual had acted secretly to downgrade results. The story was picked up by a number of other newspapers the next day, including the Daily Mail.

Ofqual is committed to operating openly and transparently and refutes the allegations that it acted in secret. We set out our expectations of the awarding bodies ahead of the awarding process and published information about our work afterwards. Our aim throughout was to ensure that candidates got the grades their work deserved and that the results were fair to all candidates, past and present.

We have written to the Sunday Times and the Daily Mail to explain our actions with regard to GCSE science in 2009.
