An Ofqual spokesperson said: "We are monitoring the situation to see if there is likely to be any impact on this summer's exam series, which is due to start next month, and will be liaising with awarding organisations to discuss the situation.
"Tried and tested contingency measures are in place to cope with disruption to the examinations system and ensure that candidates who miss assessments and exams due to measures beyond their control are treated fairly and consistently.
"Some oral and practical assessments are taking place this week and alternative arrangements are being put in place at individual centres where they are required.
"Candidates stranded abroad may also miss deadlines for handing in coursework to their teachers. Our message to these candidates is to talk to their schools if possible as they will be able to contact the awarding organisation if this is going to have an impact on final submission. Awarding organisations have established procedures for such circumstances."
